Chow Yun-fat to Play Cao Cao

On September 12, director Zhao Linshan revealed that his newest costume epic "the Bronze Sparrow Terrace" (Tong Que Tai) will start shooting on October 5.

Hong Kong heavyweight Chow Yun-fat is set to play the leading role Cao Cao-an emperor from the Three Kingdoms Period, who built the famous Bronze Sparrow Terrace, where musicians and dancers would perform to entertain guests at his banquets.

The leading female role will be portrayed by Yoon Eunhye from South Korea. According to the director, this role was inspired by a young woman's bones found in the newly excavated Caocao's tomb in Henan province.

"The film mainly focuses on Cao Cao in his old age, entailing tactics, military affairs, love and the relationship between father and son. By telling these stories, we want to express the theme of love and harmony. " Director Zhao said.

Other cast members include Japanese actor Hiroshi Tamaki, Alec Su from Taiwan, Yan Ni, Yao Lu, Wu Xiubo and Nie Yuan.

The film is scheduled to be released in October 2012.

Tamaki Hiroshi to Collaborate on China-Japan-Korea Co-Production

Actor Tamaki Hiroshi appeared in Beijing, China on November 8 to attend a press conference for the movie Doujakudai (Tong Que Tai in Chinese). The film is set in the Three Kingdoms and will focus on the story of Warlord Cao Cao in his later years. A huge cast was assembled at the press conference, including renowned Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fat.

For Tamaki this will be his first time speaking in a foreign language for a film. He will play the role of General Mu Shun in the movie and will have confrontations against Cao Cao. Regarding his foray into the global market, Tamaki says "It's my first time stepping foot into Mainland China. The story of the Three Kingdoms is popular in Japan as well. I never imagined I would participate in such a grand production. It feels like a dream for me and I am very honoured to be taking part."

The makers of star-studded costume drama "Bronze Sparrow Terrace" ("Tong Que Tai") were able to find time for a press conference during its tense shooting schedule yesterday in Beijing.

According to a report from Mtime.com, the main cast members made their appearance all together for the very first time at the event. Chinese megastar Chow Yun-fat, Alec Su, Crystal Liu and Japanese super idol Hiroshi Tamaki were all spotted on the night.

The Bronze Sparrow Terrace was built by the infamous strategist Cao Cao of the Three Kingdoms period. A large number of beautiful women lived in this place, singing and dancing for him.

Chow will portray the lead character Cao and Crystal Liu will play opposite him as the only female lead in the movie.

The movie is still in its shooting stages now and the release date has yet to be confirmed.

China's A-lister Chow Yun-fat has taken on the role of Cao Cao, a famous warlord from the Three Kingdoms Period.

Chow, Alec Su and Japanese actor Hiroshi Tamaki have attended a news conference to preview the historic epic "Tong Que Tai" ("The Bronze Sparrow Terrace").

Director Zhao Linshan says the film will focus on Cao Cao's later life, including his military affairs, love and relationship with his sons.

This is Zhao's first big-screen project. He normally only makes commercials.

Chow Yun-fat says the film will unveil a new side of Cao Cao, "I think the director and the screenwriter create a Cao Cao that is different from what we know from the books. He is more personalized. We are familiar with the Cao Cao on the battlefield, and this film looks at his family life."

Filming is now underway. It's due for release next October.

Currently working on the film BRONZE SPARROW PAVILION in Beijing, Chow Yun Fat who played Cao Cao joined the team and security measures were obviously increased. Fat Gor also continued his usual low key friendly ways. After work he dressed casually and went with his assistant to a hot pot casserole shop for dinner.

Chow Yun Fat recently has been working on the historical epic film BRONZE SPARROW PAVILION in Beijing. The film cost 130 million RMB. In the studio a palace was constructed. Playing Cao Cao in the film Chow Yun Fat's costume was finally unveiled. With a golden crown his costume was edged with gold and a giant gold chain on his chest. When he was waiting for his mark he had no expression, as if he was pondering his character.

According to the team, since Chow Yun Fat joined the team security measures have been elevated. A phones and camera ban was put in place and enforced. Chow Yun Fat's production schedule strictly adhered to the Hollywood style and ended around 4PM. Well dressed during the shoot Chow Yun Fat after work would drop his star status as he wore a down jacket and hat and dined with a male assistant at a hot pot casserole shop. He looked relaxed as he chatted and laughed

Easternlight shines on Assassins, Liaisons

Easternlight Films, the Asian label of Sydney- and Los Angeles-based sales agency Arclight Films Pty Ltd, has picked up rights to The Assassins 銅雀台, a Chinese historical action epic featuring superstar CHOW Yun-fat 周潤發 (pictured).

In Assassins, Chow plays soldier and politician Cao Cao, who appears to be plotting the overthrow of the emperor. It also stars Crystal LIU 劉亦菲, TAMAKI Hiroshi 玉木宏, Alec SU 蘇有朋, Annie Shizuka INOH 伊能靜 and CHIU Hsin-chih 邱心志.

Now in post-production, the film is directed by first timer ZHAO Linshan 趙林山, from a screenplay by WANG Bin 王斌, who previously wrote Hero 英雄 (2002), House of Flying Daggers 十面埋伏 (2004) and Fearless 霍元甲 (2006).

The company has also come aboard HUR Jin-ho 허진호's big-budget Chinese retelling of Dangerous Liaisons.

Dangerous Liaisons 危險關係 features South Korea's JANG Dong-gun 장동건, China's ZHANG Ziyi 章子怡 and Hong Kong's Cecilia CHEUNG 張柏芝 in a 1930s-set retelling of the infamous French tale of treacherous love games. Relocated to Shanghai, it has been adapted by novelist YAN Geling 嚴歌苓 (The Flowers of War 金陵十三釵).

In Berlin's European Film Market, Easternlight will also be selling the previously announced martial arts picture The Four 四大名捕, also starring Crystal Liu, and the English-language retelling of Mulan, about a famous female warriors in Chinese history. That project, described by the company as being in pre-production, previously had Dutch action specialist Jan De Bont attached as director. It is now pitching it on the strength of its Deborah Chow (The High Cost of Living) screenplay.


Easternlight picks up Chinese trio

Arclight’s Asian division, Easternlight Films, has picked up international rights to three upcoming Chinese productions – The Assassins, The Four and Hur Jin-ho’s Dangerous Liaisons.

Hur’s Chinese-language adaptation of the French classic is currently in production and will be completed in May. Produced by China’s Zonbo Media and other partners, the film is written by Yan Geling (Flowers Of War) and stars Zhang Ziyi, Jang Dong-gun, Cecilia Cheung, Lisa Lu and Shawn Du.

The Assassins, starring Chow Yun Fat, Crystal Liu and Japanese star Tamaki Hiroshi, is a $20m mystery thriller which uncovers the secret behind the death of one of the characters in China’s classic Three Kingdoms story. The film is directed by Zhao Lin Shan and written by Wang Bin (House Of Flying Daggers, Hero).

The Four, written and directed by Gordon Chan, is a $12m action epic about four special agents with extraordinary martial arts powers. The starry ensemble cast includes Deng Chao, Crystal Liu, Collin Chou, Anthony Wong and Ronald Cheng.

Both The Four and The Assassins are produced by Beijing Enlight Pictures and are also currently in production.

Easternlight is also selling the long-gestating live action version of the Mulan story which previously had Jan de Bont attached to direct. Deborah Chow is now writing the script.

In the year 198 BC, Cao Cao (CHOW YUN FAT), the Prime Minister of Han Dynasty, ventured to the east and defeated China’s greatest warrior Lv Bu, terrifying every ambitious warlord across the country. Several years later, after taking the Han Emperor under his wing Cao crowned himself King of Wei. นักแสดงผู้มักจะมาพร้อมกับบทประเภทบุคคลผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น เสี่ยวหม่า แห่ง "โหดเลวดี" หรือโคตรเซียนเกาจิ้ง ในหนังชุด God of Gambler รวมถึงล่าสุดได้สวมบทบาทเป็น โจโฉ ใน The Assassins ได้เปิดเผยว่าในชีวิตจริงแล้ว โดยเฉพาะเมื่ออยู่บ้าน ตนเองไม่ได้มีบุคลิกที่ยิ่งใหญ่เป็นยอดคนอะไรแบบนั้นเลย

"ในความเป็นจริง ผมเป็นแค่คนตัวเล็ก ๆ ในบ้านเท่านั้นเองครับ และทุกอย่างที่ผมทำก็จะขึ้นอยู่กับการตัดสินใจของภรรยาทั้งหมด เธอเป็นคนดูแลเงินที่ผมหามาได้จากงานหนัง และการลงทุนต่าง ๆ ผมได้เงินใช้แค่เดือนละ 200 เหรียญฯ (ประมาณ 800 บาท) เท่านั้นเอง" พระเอกรุ่นใหญ่กล่าว ระหว่างโปรโมตหนังเรื่อง The Assassins ที่เซียงไฮ้ "อย่าไปโดนภาพในหนังหลอกเอานะครับ ที่เห็นในจอน่ะไม่มีความจริงเลย ภาพวีรบุรุษแบบนั้นเป็นเรื่องโกหกทั้งเพ"

โจวเหวินฟะ วัย 57 ปี ยังบอกอีกว่าปกติแล้วเมื่อก่อนเขาจะเป็นคนทำอาหาร ให้กับผู้เป็นภรรยารับประทานด้วยซ้ำ แต่ในระหว่างที่เขาต้องยุ่งกับงานภาพยนตร์เธอจึงต้องเป็นคนรับผิดชอบเรื่องอาหาร ซึ่งสุดท้ายแล้วเขาก็ไม่มีสิทธิ์ตัดสินใจเรื่องอาหารการกินอะไรอยู่ดี "ไม่ว่าอาหารที่กินจะถูกหรือแพงยังไง ผมก็ไม่รู้เลย"

"ผมก็แค่กินไป ไม่มีสิทธิ์ที่จะบอกว่าอร่อยรึเปล่าด้วยซ้ำ" โจวเหวินฟะ กล่าวท่ามกลางเสียงหัวเราะของผู้คนที่อยู่ร่วมในงานแถลงข่าววันนั้น

ถือว่า โจวเหวินฟะ เป็นนักแสดงชื่อดังอีกคนที่ไม่ค่อยจะปิดบังเรื่องการใช้ชีวิตคู่นัก หลังเขาแต่งงานกับ จัสมิน ตัน ชาวสิงคโปร์ มาตั้งแต่ปี 1986 และชื่อเสียงของสุดยอดนักแสดงรายนี้ก็ไม่ได้ตกลงไปแต่อย่างใดเลย

สำหรับ The Assassins ผลงานเรื่องใหม่ของ โจวเหวินฟะ เป็นหนังทุนสร้าง 130 ล้านหยวน ที่จะเล่าเรื่องของ โจโฉ ในวันที่ขึ้นสู่อำนาจสูงสุด และต้องเผชิญหน้ากับมือสังหารที่หมายเอาชีวิตของเขา โดยหนังจะมี หลิวอี้เฟย, แอนนี่ อวี้ และทามากิ ฮิโรชิ ร่วมประชันบทบาท

"The Assassins" ready to screen

As the 11th China Changchun Film Festival has drawn to an end over the weekend, a greater blueprint is expanding for its founder, the Changchun Film Group Corporation. The corporation’s biggest investment of the year, "The Assassins", is scheduled for screening around China’s National Day holiday. Recently the director took his all-star cast on a promotional tour.
Originally entitled "Bronze Sparrow Terrace", the movie features Chow Yun-Fat as the famous Three Kingdoms period strategist, Cao Cao. After taking the Han Emperor under his wing for years, Cao built a magnificent terrace to symbolize his power, and rumors spread that he would replace the Emperor. However, astronomical signs predicted a dramatic twist and a pair of secret assassins appeared to change everything.
First-time director Zhao Linshan is also the creative mind behind the reinvention of this well-known piece of history. He received a lot of support from Changchun, his hometown. After working with a star-studded ensemble of A-List actors, including Liu Yifei, Alec Su and Annie Yi, Zhao is under pressure, but confident he can repay everyone with his work.
Zhao Linshan, Director, "The Assassins" said, "Several investors turned me down because it was deemed as a project too hard for a newcomer to handle ... But now I feel like a child who has gotten all he ever wanted. I tried my best explaining every detail to every actor in every scene, so basically I drove everyone crazy during the shooting. But now the hard part is done, we’re glad to make the film we were expecting."

With a series of historical epics on the silverscreen in the past decade, "The Assassins" will compete with previous hits such as Zhang Yimou’s "Hero" and John Woo’s "Red Cliff" with its grand visual designs, inspirational combat sequences, as well as strong characters.
Mu Fangzhou, Changchun said, "The filmmakers at the Changchun Film Group Corporation never stop challenging themselves. "The Assassins" is their latest take on Three Kingdoms epic, while war movies and rural-themed pictures remain their most competitive field. "
The North American rights to the movie have already been pre-sold for future worldwide distribution. After critically acclaimed black comedy "The Cow" and the Xinhai Revolution tribute called "China 1911", it is hoped that "The Assassins" will keep the Changchun Film Group Corporation under the mainstream spotlight.
